Monte do Aniche
An eco-coliving project
About us
The founding family has started to work on the land over 4 years ago and bit by bit more people started to join to live in the project.
Currently several families are co-living on the Land, with a total of 8 adults and 7 kids, ranging in age from new born to 10 years old.
Also part of the farm are horses, dogs, ducks and chickens.
Depending on the season, we usually host around 3 to 5 volunteers, and occasionally also guests.
At the moment there are two apartments available for families and individuals who want to rent long-term.

The Starting Point
When this land was bought, It consisted of mainly eucalyptus monoculture, overgrown or eroded areas, overgrazed pastures and a few ruins. Much has already happened in the last couple of years!
So far...
Building Changes
Here are just a few of the things that have been achieved so far:
-
Out of the 10 ruins 3 have been restored.
-
Shared kitchen, shower and compost toilets.
-
1 mobile house with two bedrooms.
-
1 co-working space has been started.
-
2 sets of boreholes, water tanks, solar-powered pumps and irrigation systems.
-
2 sets of solar power systems for electricity.
-
Sewage systems based on microbio tank processing the waste.
-
a water retention system that includes dirt roads, trenches, 3 lakes and 6 ponds
-
some of the land has been cleared and many of the native trees such as cork oak, stone oak and the strawberry tree are now thriving.

What We Do
Preparing the Setup
At the moment we are still at the beginning, building the most basic infrastructures and preparing the land to extend the gardens, recover the pastures etc...
More trees need to be planted and bare soil wants seeding with a cover crop, to just name a few things on the list!
We are cutting down eucalyptus regularly to slowly convert the monoculture into a mixed forest again, whilst preparing the wood for future use.
The location
We are situated in the beautiful South West of Alentejo, very much isolated and away from the main roads, in between Sao Luis and Vila nova de milfontes, Reliquias and Odemira.
To get here you will need to drive minimum 12 minutes on a dirt truck.
The farm is surrounded by stunning rolling hills, cultivated forests of eucalyptus and oaks and traditional Alentejo farm landscapes.
It takes 12 minutes on a dirt track to get to us, the nearest villages are 15 minutes away and it takes about 40 minutes to get to the beach.

The Surroundings
The Historical Way of the Rota Vicentina crosses right through the land and so does the river that leads to the magical canyon Pego das Pias, which is only a short hike from us. It is a perfect place to truly reconnect and enjoy the local flora and fauna, whether while hiking, biking or simply relaxing.
